That picture above is the first green tomato of the 2009 season. He does not know what danger that he is in. If he does not keep his self hid behind those leaves he might end up in the frying pan as a fried green tomato. I love fried green tomatoes. Dad.

Friday was a nice day here in Tennessee. Tempeature close to 75. And we are still having those showers. This Saturday does look a little more like we will have plenty of sunshine today and a high of 82, The dry weather is what I am needing again.

Since this is Saturday we will not have to be in any rush to have our coffee. The Starbucks coffee and the Tea are ready and I just had to have a cup right now, but you can just come on in any time today. I will be at home most of the day. We will make fresh coffee as needed. DAD.

Mary and I are still planning to make a little trip next week. We are visiting Kelly and her husband and daughter. They live in N. Ga. You should remember Kelly. She is the one that shows us all those beautiful chickens.
The Chicken Chronicles...Again

Another one of our friends, Hollie lives close and she and her husband are going to meet us there and we will all have lunch together. This is something that we have never done before and we are excited about it. It is just a one day trip we will be back in the late evening. DAD..

I am going to stop for a little while. I may stop back later in the afternoon. If I don't make it back I will see you again on Monday morning. I hope that we all can have a quiet peaceful Sunday.

Warm again this morning 66 at 3:A.M. and still showers predicted. I think that the high will again be near 80. That is fine with me

There are two questions that I need to answer here that came in a few days ago. I have misplaced the email address for both questions, One was do you use mulch ? The answer is yes I do and I believe in use lots of it.

And the other question is what is all that black stuff all around your tomatoe plants. The answer to this is Mulch.

Hi. There are at least a few possibilities for why your leaf tips are turning black.
The water on the leaves definitely could be the source of the problem. When leaves stay wet for some time, it’s an opportunity for fungal diseases to develop. It wouldn’t be quite as much as a problem if they had been outside, since the sun would dry the moisture. Since they are inside, though, the water is likely to sit on the leaf surface longer.
Water at the base, not on the leaves. In addition, try to water in the morning so there is more time for the moisture to dry if some leaves do happen to get wet.
It could also be a bacterial problem. For example, bacterial canker will turn the edges of leaves brown.
Have you been fertilizing your tomatoes? Since they are in pots, it’s very possible that too much fertilizer salts can accumulate and burn the leaves, especially if the leaves are being watered more than the soil.
Do you have many plants that are very close together? If there is not enough room for air to flow through, that could also encourage diseases.
If possible, you could send in a picture of your tomatoes so we can better see what is going on. You could also take it in to your local extension office to see if they know of problems specific to your area.

It is too early to go up to the Eagle Web Cam It is still dark up there and I think that they would still be sleeping. But when the sun comes up we should check on them. I wish some one would give us an idea on when they mght be flying away. DAD.

I am always glad to see the light of another day. I some times think of the words of a hymn that says " New each morning are His mercies, and his faithfulness so great." We all should be so thankful for that.

Our weather here is still warm and wet. Wednesday afternoon we had a thunderstorm and almost 1/2 inch of rain fell in just a few minuets. We are begining this day with a tempeature of 61 and guess what, more thunder storms in the afternoon. This does not worry me as I have my tomato garden in good shape, I am just waiting for a tomato sandwich.
.
I think thar I smell coffee, come on and we will try it out. And I am sure that the tea is ready. These little coffee and tea times are so nice. Why don't more of you stop in ?
.

“Hi, I planted my tomatoes & tomatillo’s about two weeks ago. I added compost and coffee grounds when I dug the holes. I have given them deep water a few times and it also rained a bit.
They plants were really healthy and I can’t see any evidence of bugs. I did get all the plants accept for one at the same nursery. I am worried they may have something I can’t fix, and need to know what it is in case I need new plants. Thanks.”

I love holiday's that give us a little time off to settle down and get our thoughts going in the right direction. But this last one was just a little long for me. I am glad that it is over. Now we can get back doing the things that we love too do. I miss hearing from you during the holidays. So welcome back to Dad's Tomato Garden.

Early in the month of June Mary and I are planing on a little trip that we have wanted to do for a long time. We are going to visit Kelly down in N. Georgia. I am sure that many of you know Kelly. She is the one that writes this blog below showing us some very beautiful chickens. We know that we are going to enjoy this visit and we hope to bring back some good pictures and we might even talk Kelly into making a Video that we could show you.

The Cam to the Eagle Web Cam is also in service, I had several chances to look at them yesterday.

We did a lot of work on Saturday, got all the mulch spread and all the cages in place. Now we can sit back for a few weeks and dream about eating a big red ripe tomato.

.

If you have the time I hope that you will view my two Cams # 1 and 2. And look the tomato garden over from the two different views, and see if you can see the work that we have done. The link to these cams is in the side panel.

We are still enjoying warm weather, starting off this Monday morning at 3 A.M. the tempeature is 67 with a high of around 80 expected. It does mention showers in the afternoon. Sinc I have the tomato garden in good shape and all the weeds gone a good showere would not be bad. Anything that is good for the tomatoes pleases me.

That’s when Martin and Jennifer Ringhofer host TomatoFare.
The event was started as a way to revive tourism in the Soap Lake area.
Martin Ringhofer had started growing heirloom tomatoes after a serious illness. He felt that promoting the heirloom tomato would be a good way to leave his mark on the world.

When I was attending community college, my favorite class was Italian Cooking.
A friend from high school happened to sign up for the same class, and we had many adventures together, whether it was a hand mixer that sparked or accidentally using up all of the good Parmesan.
Since then I’ve been fond of trying as many different Italian foods as possible. The day that a little Italian deli opened near my house. I’ve spent as much as $26/pound for a good imported Italian cheese.
The inspiration for this sandwich comes from my local airport, of all places. While I was waiting for a plane, I decided to grab a sandwich at Granato’s. The result was simple but delicious.
Ingredients:
1 small ciabatta (an Italian bread often used to make sandwiches)
1 tomato (homegrown beefsteak is best)

The weather is a very important subject for me these days. And it could not have pleased me any better than it has. This Friday morning at 3 A.M. the tempeature was 64 with a high of 82 expected. And listen too this plenty of Sun Shine. Watch them maters grow.

And now a little about the tomatoes, as you know Cam 1 & 2 are bothing looking at the garden from different sides, So you can get a better view. And remember that these plants were set out on April the 24, just about one month ago. You will begin to see a lot mors growth from here on in to tomato eating time. Smile.

We need to talk a little about the weather right here. It has been almost perfect for me, and it is looking good for several days ahead. This morning at 3:00 a.m. the temperature was 60 and we have a 82 for the day, and plenty of that beautiful sun. Come on there you Tomatoes it time now for you to do your part, I am in a hurry for a good tomato sandwich.

I don't think that we should go up to Eagle Web Cam very early this morning. We need to let them get a little rest. They had a rough day yesterday, it tired me out just watching them. I hope that what was being done was successful. It was interesting to watch, it did seem to me to be a very dangerous job. Thanks to all of you that had a part in the job. DAD.

Traveling Abroad? Learn How to Say Tomato!

Someday soon I dream of traveling around the world.
I am fascinated by other cultures, especially the foods and languages.
In fact, I have a dream of being able to read and write in 11 different languages. So far I know English, Spanish at an intermediate level, and a bit in a few other languages.
As I was idly thinking tonight, I realized that I only knew how to say tomato in 2 different languages - English and Spanish. How would I ever survive in another country if I didn’t know how to ask for my favorite vegetable?
I hopped on over to Google to use their translator. It features 42 languages. When I typed in “I want to grow a tomato”, I learned that I need to say “Voglio crescere un pomodoro.” when in Italy.

Without further ado, here are their translations for the word “tomato”.
Albanian - domate
Arabic - الطماطم
Bulgarian - домат
Catalan - tomàquet

The sun never sets on Dad's Tomato Garden Journal.

I need to try and explain about the picture above.This was taken yesterday afternoon at 5:30 p.m. with our Outdoor Cam # 2. At that hour the evening sun was so bright that the picture did not turn out very well. What you are suppose to see is Ted my next door neighbor cultivating the tomato garden. Look to the left in the picture and you might see him. We will try this later in the week when the sun is not so bright. DAD.

I was real late yesterday morning with our tea and coffee, that is not going to happen this morning. The first thing that I done when I came to my office this morning was to turn that perculator on, you should be able to smell it now. Sit down a little while and visit with me.

We had some wonderful tomato growing weather yesterday and we are expecting more today. This morning at 3:00 A.M. the tempeature is 49 and I think that the high is to be near 95 with plenty of sun. With not any chance of rain. Since I have the garden cultivated I am glad to see this. Won't be long now.

I am feeling very much better this morning, I did sleep good and that helps this old man a lot. And it also helps when things are running a little better.

Reader Questions About Upside Down Tomatoes

Upside-down tomatoes continue to be a garden trend.
This week we have two questions from readers about this growing style.

“Can one plant 2 tomato plants upside down in a 5 gallon bucket ? Such as 2 holes in the bucket, will there be enought room to grow both?”
Hi Kacy! Yes, you can do 2 tomato plants. It would work better if you drilled both a 2″ hole and smaller drainage holes in both the bottom and the lid to plant one at each end. You will need to watch carefully and add soil as needed. You will also need to make sure to use fertilizers as needed since there will be 2 plants competing for all of the nutrients.

Yesterday I forgot the coffee and now this morning I have forgot to mention the trip up to the Eagle Web Cam . I sure don't want to do that for I can see that the time is near for them to leave us. They are going to be missed by many. Thanks to all that are responsible for us having this chance to see the eagles from the time that the eggs were laid untill they fly away. Dad.
