"A hot house is a great tool that any gardener can benefit from but not everyone has the money or the land required to build one.

A simple hot house can be designed to fit on a windowsill or shelf with no problem.
The concept of a hot house is that it is heated “building” that utilizes solar radiation.

Reflective materials compound this radiation through the use of stone, barrels painted black and filled with water or a combination of many different technologies. Below is a list of supplies that are needed for one hot house but I promise once you make one you will want to make more.

Supplies
Knife
1 12-inch by 12-inch by 16-inch cardboard box
Ruler
Marker
Scissors
1 roll of aluminum foil
1 11-gallon clear plastic garbage bag
Super glue
Thumbtacks
Bag of potting soil
Seeds such as cold season crops such as Bibb lettuce or radish
Package of clothespins

Directions
Measure 4-inches from the bottom of the front of the box. Draw a straight line following this measurement all the way to the sides.
Continue the line on each side up to the opposite upper corner.
Cut along the line. The front of the box should have a 4-inch lip with it tapering up the sides.
Cut aluminum foil to fit the sides and back of the box. Secure the foil onto the box with super glue.
Using scissors cut plastic bag in half along the side and bottom.
Place one half of the cut plastic bag on top of the foil.
Place 3-inches of soil in the box and smooth the surface over with hand or hand rake.
Plant chosen seeds and gently water in.
Taking the other half of the plastic bag, place it on top of the cut box. Pull tight and secure with clothespins.

Place hot house on windowsill or shelf.
Check soil often to prevent the soil from drying out.
This hot house helps any gardener overcome the gardening withdraws and helps extend the season by providing a winter supply of cole crops. Also it is great for those who live in apartments and cannot have a true hot house. So until we blog again, as I age the growing seasons seems to become shorter without any means.
Hot houses cold frames, and hot beds all extend the time until the tilling of the soil can began again without loss of time. So this year pledge to stretch the gardening clock with a hot house that no one can knock.'

This is Saturday, I am going to slow down not stop, I keep this open all the day as usual, so I will be seeing you all day.

Remember the Side Panel.

I do have something new to announce. You can now view the lighted fountain and the garden by clicking CAM-1 right below

DAD'S FRIDAY ENTRY TWO THOUSAND NINETY

Good Morning,

Things are looking much better this Friday morning, we cleaned up some of the hail storm mess, more Tomato plants will be here soon, and we are going to produce some Tomatoes, Roses and Smiles in spite of the problems that we have had.

Our # 2 Camera is still not in service, there is some trouble in the cable that serves it, the hail storm beat very hard on the side of the bulding where the cable comes in from the street. Verizon the cable company that serves us will be helping to get it going today, I hope.

Click Here to see a wonderful hummingbird video.

Someone sent the this story belowI don't know who wrote it but I want whoever did to get credit for it.

"The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder.
I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being..
She said, 'Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?'
I laughed and enthusiastically responded, 'Of course you may!' and she gave me a giant squeeze..
'Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?' I asked.
She jokingly replied, 'I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, and have a couple of kids...'
'No seriously,' I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.
'I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!' she told me.
After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake.
We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this 'time machine' as she shared her wisdom and experience with me..
Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up.
At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium.. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three by five cards on the floor.

Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, 'I'm sorry I'm so jittery. I'll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know.'
As we laughed she cleared her throat and began, ' We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing.
There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die.
We have so many people walking around who are dead and don't even know it!
There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up.
If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight.
Anybody! Can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding opportunity in change. Have no regrets.
The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. She concluded her speech by courageously singing 'The Rose.'
She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives. At the year's end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those months ago.
One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep.
Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be.
These words have been passed along in loving memory of ROSE.
REMEMBER, GROWING OLDER IS MANDATORY. GROWING UP IS OPTIONAL

. We make a Living by what we get. We make a Life by what we give..

....
God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage.

If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it. "

.....

This is going to be all for this day, I have a little more work to do outside on Cam # 2 and a few more things, I hope to be back tomorrow with our regulsr Journal, As I said above every thing is improving and we hope to have those plants in the ground soon.

I hope to see you in the Morning.

DAD'S THURSDAY'S ENTRY TWO THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED NINETY

" And there abideth Faith, Hope and Charity but the greatest of these is Charity"

( Note: The # 2 outside Camera will not be working today, because of cable trouble from the hail storm. DAD )

Good Morning,

We hope that all is well with you today. We don't know to well about ourselves yet, we had a fierce hail storm last night around 8 P.M In all of my 98 years I have never been in one like this one. It is still dark as I write but as soon as we can see.

Mary and I are going to see what damage, we fear that all of our tomato crop is wiped out. We will let you know as soon as we can. As the large golf ball sizes or larger hail was falling we could look out our front door and see the street full of hail and what an awful noise it was making, scary to Dad, Mary and Prince.

Well here is the report on our loss, All of our 41 tomato plants are gone, wiped out. All we can do now is try to replace them, and it is getting late for that, and expensive also. No insurance on these.

There is also damage to our home , Roof, windows, siding, and driveway. Insurance on this.

And Then I Saw

I looked up in the sky last night

It was so dark, I needed light.

The journey seemed so very far,

…And then I saw a star.

Where was all that had been bright?

On this cold and solemn night.

I needed help it must come soon,

…And then I saw the moon.

I thought the night would never end

If only I could find a friend!

I lost my way, where could I run?

…And then I saw the sun.

Sun ruled the day and made it bright,

The stars and moon still ruled by night

Yet the best was yet to come

…For then I saw the SON.

Plant a Garden by Egdar Guest

If your purse no longer bulges and you’ve lost your golden treasure,If at times you think you’re lonely and have hungry grown for pleasure,Don’t sit by your hearth and grumble, don’t let mind and spirit harden. If it’s thrills of joy you wish don't forget to work and plant a garden!
If it’s drama that you sigh for, plant a garden and you’ll get it You will know the thrill of battle fighting foes that will beset it if you long for entertainment and for pageantry most glowing,Plant a garden and this summer spendyour time with green things growing.
If it’s comradeship you sight for, learn the fellowship of daisies. You will come to know your neighborby the blossoms that he raises; If you’d get away from boredomand find new delights to look for,Learn the joy of budding pansies which you’ve kept a special nook for.
If you ever think of dying and you fear to wake tomorrow Plant a garden! It will cure you of your melancholy sorrow once you’ve learned to know peonies, petunias, and roses,You will find every morning some new happiness discloses.

This poem is in the public s

I have enjoyed my visit with you this morning. I will see you on Wednesday morning if all is well.

Pucker Up and Plant Some Dill

..
Posted: 23 Apr 2011 07:45 AM PDT
By Mindy McIntosh-Shetter

Everyone is familiar with dill as one of the sour components of dill pickles but dill also has a long history as an herb that provided protection for those who processed it.
The term “dill” comes from an Old Norse term, “dilla”, that means to soothe, calm and/or lull.

Dill was valued by the Romans, as a way of improving ones luck, while the Greeks viewed it as a way of encouraging wealth.
Many Romans and Greeks hung the seed heads of dill in homes, doorways, and above cradles to protect the inhabitance from evil.

It was also believed that if evil approached you, protection could be acquired by serving the evil spirit a cup of dill tea. On the other end of the spectrum, it was believed that if you served wine infused with dill to someone who you desired to have a relationship with then…

Regardless of ones feeling about dill, this herb is a beautiful addition to any garden and is a great herb to start with especially if one is a beginning gardener.

To start a dill-planting project, either plant in a container or in the garden. Dill requires a rich, well-drained soil. Only plant dill seed and not plants. Dill does not do well when it is transplanted and since it is so easy to grow from seed there is no real reason to plant plants.

Start the dill-planting project in the spring by sprinkling the seed on the garden soil and cover with ¼ inch of soil.
Water the area in and monitor the moisture level throughout the season. Continue planting seeds every three weeks until mid-summer is reached.

This approach will guarantee a constant supply of dill through the whole growing season.
To get the most from the garden space, consider planting dill around roses. Roses are notorious attractors of aphids. Dill attracts beneficial insects whose larvae feed on aphids.

To add a designer touch to the garden space or container garden, plant dill and marigolds together. Never plant dill and fennel together. Both of these plants will pollinate the other and produce herbs that are not true. This lack of “trueness” will prevent the herbs from being edible.

Both leaves and seeds can be harvested from the dill plant. To harvest dill leaves, pick in the early morning and only pick what you are going to use that day. To harvest the seeds, wait until the seed head turns brown. Once they turn brown, cut the seed head off and place into a paper bag. Hang the bag up and wait for the seeds to fall into the bag and enjoy.

Until we blog again, sweet and sour is the game when one thinks of dill. Remember though, that if evil spirits prowl or love evades then give dill a try to save the day.

Knopf's poem for today is Kwon Homun’s “Two Poems On Fishing” written in the 16th century. A popular subject that describes the quiet reflective process being more important than the product...“the best way to understand how to live is to ‘fish without catching any.

”Two Poems On FishingShould I go drinking and wenching?Oh, no. It isn’t proper for the poet that I am. Shall I go hunting wealth and honor?I am not inclined that way either. Well, let me be a fisherman or shepherd and enjoy myself on the reedy shore. When it stops raining at the fishing site I will use green-moss for bait. With no idea of catching the fishI will enjoy watching them at play.A slice of moon passes as it casts a silver li onto the green stream below.

DAD'S ENTRY TWO THOUSAND EIGHTY FOUR

" We must begin this and every day of the year with God "

P1010083

Here above is our first Rose of the 2011 season

Hi DAD,

My daughter sent this to me. I believe you learned this Cherokee Indian's lesson a long time ago. Now, in your own special way, you teach others to feed the good wolf.

Thank you. Aloha, always, Betty

Which wolf?

An old Cherokee Indian chief was teaching his grandson about life…
“A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy.
“It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves.
“One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, self-doubt, and ego.
“The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.
“This same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather,
“Which wolf will win?”
The old chief replied,”The one you feed.”

Thank you Betty for the above, Dad

I want to ask you first, how do you feel this Thursday morning ? I am feeling good and after a cup of Sumatra x bold Starbucks coffee I will be ready to get busy. We had a busy day again yesterday, and very thing working our way.

This Lyrical Verse by Stephen Sondheim is Knopf's Poem of the Day and I thought you would enjoy it.

"Green Finch and Linnet Bird," sung by the character of Johanna in Sweeney Todd, may not be a poem, but to read it without its haunting, angular melody is to "hear" it slightly differently.

GREEN FINCH AND LINNET BIRD
Green finch and linnet bird,Nightingale, blackbird,How is it you sing? How can you jubilate,Sitting in cages,Never taking wing?Outside the sky waits,Beckoning, beckoning,Just beyond the bars,How can you remain,Staring at the rain,Maddened by the stars? How is it you singAnything? How is it you sing?Green finch and linnet bird,Nightingale, blackbird,How is it you sing?Whence comes this melody constantly flowing? Is it rejoicing or merely halloing? Are you discussingOr fussingOr simply dreaming? Are you crowing? Are you screaming?Ringdove and robinet,Is it for wages,Singing to be sold?Have you decided it'sSafer in cages,Singing when you're told?My cage has many rooms,Damask and dark.Nothing there sings,Not even my lark.Larks never will, you know,When they're captive.Teach me to be more adaptive.Green finch and linnet bird,Nightingale, blackbird,Teach me how to sing.If I cannot fly,Let me sing.

Thanks Joan for all the things that you send my way. DAD

" Measure twice- Saw once ".. This is the policy of all good carpenters , I am now making that my policy in talking. Think twice before I ever open my mouth. My talking has caused me so much trouble in the past. I remember what James says about the tongue in his writing.

Good Morning.

I hope that all is well with you this Monday morning. You know that it is the day that I like the best, I am anxious to get to working producing Tomatoes, Rose and Smiles. I am feeling real good this morning, even smiling here at this early hour.

The weather looks much better this morning We started the day off with a 48 degrees and we are promised a 78 with no rain, now that would make any tomato produce at least grin a little.

A few of my plants have arrived and I may get a few in the ground this morning.

NOT ALL HEROES ARE PEOPLE

"James Crane worked on the 101st floor of Tower 1 of the World Trade Center. He is blind so he had his golden retriever named Daisy. After the plane hit 20 stories below, James knew that he was doomed, so he let Daisy go, out of an act of love.

She darted away into the darkened hallway. Choking on the fumes of the jet fuel and the smoke James was just waiting to die. About 30 minutes later, Daisy comes back along with James' boss, who Daisy just happened to pick up on floor 112.

On her first run of the building, she leads James, James' boss, and about 300 more people out of the doomed building. But she wasn't through yet, she knew there were others who were trapped. So, highly against James' wishes she ran back in the building. On her second run, she saved 392 lives.

Again she went back in. During this run, the building collapses. James hears about this and falls on his knees into tears. Against all known odds, Daisy makes it out alive, but this time she is carried by a firefighter. "She led us right to the people, before she got injured" the fireman explained.

Her final run saved another 273 lives. She suffered acute smoke inhalation, severe burns on all four paws, and a broken leg, but she saved 967 lives. Daisy is the first civilian Canine to win the Medal of Honor of New York City.

I hope you enjoyed this story. I thought it was terrific." DAD.

" Three things in human life are important, the first is to be kind, the second is to be kind, and the third one is to be kind "

Good Morning.

My son, Jim, went fishing on Thursday to Douglas Lake. He and his buddies caught 23 nice “croppies”. They are delicious to eat, and I’m hoping he bring me a mess soon.DAD

Look at that smile, he must have saw something funny, or heard a joke from one of his friends,

Jim loves to fish and I am glad that he is retired from Eastman and has a chance to go often. He has a nice pontoon boat, and he has two other fishermen that go with him.

You may have noticed in the label for this post I said " save your eggs " now you may not know what that means to me, when I was a little boy many years ago we were raised in a happy but poor home. My mother had a few chickens that she kept and she sold the eggs to help buy other things, and just a few days before Easter she would save the the eggs to color and hide them for her happy children to search for. Oh what fun we had. Dad

Oh what a difference in the lives of our young people today. Dad.

I wish that I could stay and visit you a little longer, but I must get out of here and try to earn at least the salt that goes in my bread.

Pansies (650 x 410)-1

From Joan: "Here is a photo of my basket of Pansies and a poem about Pansies by Cindy Lynn"

Pansies

Petals of velvet, colors so bright,

Smiling and nodding long into the night.

Round, joker faces that dance with the moon,

Lilting and tilting a flower song tune.

Warm summer sunbeams captured for all

By round little flowers so sweet and so small.

Bright pansy colors so sweet and so small.

Reflecting the moonbeams that dance in the night.
