Another Update

I have been negligent in posting on Dad’s blog as well as my own, but thanks for dropping in to check on things.

Mary is all settled in a senior living apartment. It is very nice and I think it will be a good place for her. She lives there with Prince and enjoys his company very much. A pet is wonderful therapy as well as a great companion.

We had an estate sale at Dad’s home last weekend on Friday and Saturday. We sold lot of things, and were happy to see them go on to be used again. Many came buy just to buy something that Dad had owned in his house. It was sad on many different levels. We still have things that did not sell that we plan to donate to charity within the next few weeks.

As many of you know, last Sunday was Dad’s birthday (September 2). Dad would have been 99 years old. We are disappointed that he did not make it 99 and many more years. We are glad he had such a good state of health up to the very end of his life. He is sorely missed. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of something I want to tell him or ask him.

Here’s a picture of Dad when he was working on his blog. He was always looking for something interesting to post.

Up and Coming
We have met with a realtor and she is now evaluating the property for value. We also have a home improvement expert looking at the property to see what might need to be done to promote the sale of the property. Then will make some decisions like selling as-is or with improvements.

We also have our church convention coming up at the end of this month. Dad always looked so forward to going over to the farm and attending the 4 days of spiritual help. I would help him get his golf cart over to the farm to use during those four days. It was very helpful to him and others. We will certainly miss Dad a lot during those four days.

All else is going pretty good. I feel a heavy burden on my shoulders right now as I work to get the estate settled, the house sold, and taking care of things around my own home. This shall pass and there will be brighter days.

Let’s Cheer Up
I’m a little down but I purpose to cheer up. As Dad used to say, “Someone said cheer up, things could be worse. So I cheered up, and sure enough things got worse.” He would have a big smile when he said that.

Dad would have a word of encouragement for all of us. Often he would tell us to “Hang in there.”

Thanks so much for the update...I find myself wishing he had got to taste one more of his tomatoes, meet his latest g-g-grandson or eat another fried green tomato. He sure made a lasting impression on every one who knew him, even if we only knew him through this blog. Prayers for you all, Sheila

Glad that you did an update. Glad that Mary is settled in at a good place with Prince. May God continue to be with you all as you as you make decisions what to do. I love this family even though I never got a chance to meet any of you in person. I really did want to meet Dad in person but it was not to be.

How wonderful that Prince and Mary are still together.

Life is changing, but your dad's spirit and wisdom will always be with you.

I was thinking about you just the other day and wondering how things were going, so I'm glad you took the time to let us know. Your dad always had an encouraging word for us. Yes, hang in there. This too shall pass. One day at a time is the way to do it. Take good care !

Hey Jim,
Everyone appreciates your taking time to post on Dad's blog. He would be happy to know it too. Does Mary have a computer at her new home? I would like to send her a note...we got close through the years.
I have fresh Cherokee Purple tomatoes that I would be packing up and mailing to Dad; we used to do that for each other. His would be early and mine would be late.
I still have sweet memories and a couple of messages he left on my recorder that I listen to now and again. We all miss him and we celebrated his birthday for him this year.
Let me know about Mary's computer situation; if she doesn't have one, then I would like her address so I can send her snail mail. itsvicki@live.com is my address. I hope you and Beverly are doing well.
Thanks Jim,
Vicki in Birmingham

Echoing other friends' feelings and thoughts, so much. Miss Dad and everyone here. SO GLAD to hear that Ms. Mary and Prince are together and settled in. I have emailed her a couple of times and not heard back, so I also wonder if she is online at all.

Having gone through a lot of what you're dealing with, I know all too well how emotionally charged it can be, as well as just stressful on all levels. Some day you will be able to look back on it from the other side, and be glad you were able to take care of the necessary business, although it has to be hard to sell your Dad's home and belongings. Wish I had been able to attend sale, but I'm in L.A. Metro. I have an autographed copy of Dad's book, and that is precious to me.

My best to your wonderful family.

I guess I thought he would be here forever as I met him years ago along with Mary when I first started blogging on the web. Please express my sympathy to Mary the next time you see her. I was always amazed at the wonderful tomato gardens and always kept tract of the ones being planted.
