Reader Questions: Wilting Buds and Watering Containers

“I have 2 old German’s planted for about 40 days, they are approx 3′ tall , look healthy as can be BUT the buds stem and all wilt and drop off? The leaves around them wilt also, any suggestions?”
Hello Andy. If it was just the blossoms I would be inclined to saythat it was a case of blossom drop, but it sounds like something else when the leaves are wilting too.
Have you noticed any spots or discolorations on the wilting parts?
There are some wilts that can affect tomato plants, but most have ringsor spots of some kind, along with abnormal colors.
Check out this article about Tomato Wilt Problems from the University of Tennessee Extension service. If none of those match, send us a picture so we can see what’s going on a bit better. I hope it clears up soon!

Attack of the 4-pound Heirloom Tomatoes

As reported by Jennifer Amato in the North-South Brunswick Sentinel, one corner of New Jersey is being attacked by 4-pound heirloom tomatoes.
OK, maybe they are more like welcome guests in Jim and Lynn Nicoletti’s backyard, which holds three 8-foot tomato plants.
Two of the largest tomatoes have weighed 4 pounds and three and a half pounds.
Jim Nicoletti has a few secrets for growing such large heirlooms. One is about watering: “I realized if I stopped watering the plants and started watering the roots, they grow better.”
Another thing that helps his tomatoes is all the sun that hits them—especially as it reflects off the vinyl siding of the house.
Now, if you’re eager to grow some monster heirlooms, perhaps you can replicate those tips, but this last bit of advice may be more difficult to follow: Nicoletti’s seeds come from friends of 40 years and fellow North Brunswick residents, William and Dee Krausse—seeds that date back to William Krausse’s grandfather.
In fact, Krausse’s heirlooms are rather famous. In 1987, “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” noted that although Krausse lost the 1979 New Jersey Championship Tomato Weigh-In Contest because he sliced into a 5-pound tomato, he did win the following year with a 4-pound tomato.
But Krausse isn’t one to keep all the tomatoes to himself. Along with sharing seeds with Nicoletti, Krausse has sent the magic heirloom seeds as far as Germany, Holland and South Korea—and other friends have also been contest winners with Krausse’s seeds.
So, do tell: how big are your heirloom tomatoes?

We enjoyed some rain yesterday afternoon. Things are looking better here this morning.

I hope that all of you had a nice and safe 4th. Mary and I did. We enjoyed our time in Kingsport with Jim & Beverly and Kevin, Lesly, Kara and Zachary & getting to see my great granddog. Oreo. And we do have a host of friends up there that we had a visit with. Even though you enjoy every minute of it you are always glad to get back home. One man said after he returned from a visit,

Watering Your Tomatoes

A growing plant need about 2 inches of water each week to thrive. .
Growing tomato plants In an ideal world, this would be provided by Mother Nature in the form of rainfall, and indeed it sometimes is.
But what happens when it’s not?

.

When your tomatoes are thirsty and Mama doesn’t deliver, you’ll probably need to provide each plant with several gallons of water every few days. The simplest way to do this is with a good, old-fashioned watering can. A large can holds plenty of water for a thirsty tomato; the trick is to pour slowly enough that it sinks into the soil rather than running off to water the weeds nearby.
A hose is somewhat easier to use than a can, since you can set it to a trickle and leave it at the base of the plant for 10 or 15 minutes. Even easier than a regular hose is a soaker hose, which is basically a hose with holes poked in it so that water dribbles out all along the length. A soaker hose laid carefully around your tomato plants can save you a lot of watering time – just hook it up to your regular hose, turn it on, and go have a cup of coffee (watering is best done early). Come back, turn it off, and you’re done for the day.
Finally, for the gadget-lover, there’s DIY drip irrigation. To do this, cut the bottom off of a 2-liter plastic soda bottle (available by the carload from your local recycling drop-off), drill a few holes in the cap, and plant the thing top down beside your tomato seedling. When you’re ready to water, fill the bottle and let it soak into the soil from below. This is kind of fun, and is a great way to provide extra water if you’ll be gone for a few days.

ENTRY SEVENTEEN HUNDRED & SEVENTY-EIGHT

Hello friends,

Time is so precious-do not waste it.

We had a wonderful day yesterday with our good friends Michael and Pamela. Pamela came to pick us up this morning, then we returned with her to Dayton and to Michael and Pamela's home for a lovely visit. Then later they took us out to eat at a Mexican restaurant near their home. I couldn't begin to tell you how delicious the food was! Later we got to meet Pamela's cousin and wife. Pamela's cousin got the electric cords hooked up so that the Cam will have sort of a climate control feature...when the temperature reaches a certain degree it will turn on the fan in the summer. then when the temperature gets real cold,the heater element will kick on. When we got back home Michael and Pamela got it installed again for us. Thank you for everything, Michael and Pamela!

“I am trying out the upside down tomato planters for the first time. Both of my plants (Mountain Pride) are yellowing and curling upwards towards the root. Any advice?”
Hi. This is likely due to a phenomenon called tropism. A tropism is a factor in plants where they move or grow in response to the environment around them. Phototropism occurs when plants move towards a light source.
When tomato plants are first planted upside down, the planter is often in the way of the direct sunlight. The plant will start growing upwards to reach towards the light, so it can still photosynthesize.
There’s also another tropism in effect: gravitropism. Plants respond to gravity in that the roots grow downwards (toward gravity) and stems grow upwards (away from gravity). They may hang down more as the tomatoes form on the plants.

"Warshing" Clothes Recipe . . . . . . . .

Never thought of a "washer" in this light before..what a blessing!

"Warshing Clothes Recipe" -- imagine having a recipe for this ! ! !
.
Years ago an Alabama grandmother gave the new bride the following recipe:
this is an exact copy as written and found in an old scrapbook--with spelling errors and all.
.
WARSHING CLOTHES
.
Build fire in backyard to heat kettle of rain water. Set tubs so smoke won't blow in eyes if wind is pert.
.
Shave one hole cake of lye soap in boilin water.
Sort things, make 3 piles
1 pile white,
1 pile colored,
1 pile work britches and rags.
.
To make starch, stir flour in cool water to smooth, then thin down with boiling water.
.
Take white things, rub dirty spots on board, scrub hard, and boil, then rub colored don't boil just wrench and starch.
Take things out of kettle with broom stick handle, then wrench, and starch.
Hang old rags on fence.
Spread tea towels on grass.
Pore wrench water in flower bed Scrub porch with hot soapy water.
Turn tubs upside down.
Go put on clean dress, smooth hair with hair combs.. Brew cup of tea, sit and rock a spell and count your blessings.

Paste this over your washer and dryer Next time when you think things are bleak, read it again, kiss that washing machine and dryer, and give thanks.. First thing each morning you should run and hug your washer and dryer, also your toilet---those two-holers used to get mighty cold!

Our Out Door Cam # 2 will be out of service for most of the day 7/3/9. we are installing cooling and heating for the cam. The extreme tempeatures both cold or hot can harm the camera. ENTRY # SEVENTEEN HUNDRED & SEVENTY FIVE

This Sunflower is growing in my tomato garden, close to a tomato plant. I did not plant this, the birds that I feed done that for me. Dad.

I was walking through my tomato garden last evening around 8 p.m. and this is what I saw. When I see the tomatoe plants looking like this I cannot keep from snapping a picture. I always carry my little camera in my shirt pocket.

Useing lot's of mulch and controlled watering has kept the blight down this year. You can see that there is not very much on these plants above. Dad.

“I have a quick question. I haven’t heard of anyone doing this, so there must be a reason. But maybe I don’t know.
We have a daylight basement with lots of southern-facing windows. I would like to grow fresh “garden” food down there in the winter. We live in eastern Oregon (the dry side of the state.) Winter daylight is as little as 8-10 hours in the dead of winter
Does anyone know if one can be successful growing tomatoes in this kind of an inside garden in the winter? If this is possible, are there other fresh-type fruits or vegetables that would be successful for winter indoor-gardening as well?

Hi Patt! Growing vegetables like you describe can be done…though you would likely need to add in some additional grow lights to the room, as well as make sure the room was kept warm enough.
