My young son starts to school today...It's going to be sort of strange and new to him for awhile, and I wish you would sort of treat him gently.
You see, up to now he's been king of the roost...He's been boss of the backyard...His mother has always been near to soothe his wounds and repair his feelings.
But now things are going to be different.
This morning he's going to walk down the front steps, wave his hand, and start out on the great adventure...It is and adventure that might take him across continents, across oceans...It's an adventure that will probably include wars and tragedy and sorrow...To live his life in the world he will have to live in, will require faith and love and courage.
So, World, I wish you would sort of look after him...Take him by the hand and teach him things he will have to know.
But do it gently, if you can.
He will have to learn, I know, that all men are not just, that all men are not true.
But teach him also that for every scoundrel there is a hero...that for every crooked politician there is a great and dedicated leader...Teach him that for every enemy, there is a friend.
Steer him away from envy, if you can...and teach him the secret of quiet laughter.
In school, World, teach him it is far more honorable to fail than to cheat...Teach him to have faith in his own idea, even if everyone says they are wrong...Teach him to be gentle with gentle people and tough with tough people.
Try to give my son the strength not to follow the crowd when everyone is getting on the bandwagon...Teach him to listen to all men - but teach him also to filter all he hears on a screen of truth and take just the good that siphons through.
Teach him, if you can, how to laugh when he's sad...Teach him there is no shame in tears...Teach him there can be glory in failure and despair in success.
Treat him gently, World, if you can, but don't coddle him...Because only the test of fire makes fine steel...Let him have the courage to be impatient...Let him have the patience to be brave.
Let him be no other man's man...Teach him always to have sublime faith in himself. Because then he will always have sublime faith in mankind.
This is quite and order, World, but see what you can do...He's such a nice little fellow, my son! .

Here is something above that I enjoyed very much. It did bring back a lot of sweet memories that LaVerne and I shared in when Jim and Mary were at this place in their lives. It also made me think of Sara, you all know that she is a Teacher and an execlent one. I can see that by what she tells us sometimes in her blog of things that she experiences, and Sara Dad thinks that you already do what is said above and much more. And don't forget those two beautiful Shelties, Misty and Oreo that she teaches. DAD

That was a sweet passage about a young boy going off to school. A good reminder for today.
Yesterday, during my two free periods, I had lots of work to catch up on. Paper work and such. However, students kept popping in my room to get some extra help with this & that, or to talk about various problems they are having.
None of my paperwork got done. I was a little frustrated at first, the piles on my desk seemed to grow before my eyes. Then, I came to my senses. I'm there for the kids. They are what is important about my job. They need my smiles and encouragement. Plus, when you work one on one with them, they are able to learn SO much!
You know what? I am sure every other teacher in my school would have done the same thing.

Good Morning DAD..
After two night time visits I am able to join you for a morning cup of Starbucks. The frost is on the windows and the trees branches are blowing in the wind, what could be better than a delicious cup of bold Sumatra on a morning like this. I won't be staying in today. I will be visiting one of Sara's childhood playmates who just had a baby girl. She lives in Florida and is visiting her family here. I hope she brought some winter clothes for that little one.
I think every parent of a girl or a boy should read and reread Dan Valentine's Dear World. It is a keeper and one I will send to my daughter in NJ who is now alone raising those 2 wonderful grandsons. I'll also send it to my sisters so they can print it out for the parents of their grandchildren. You do know where to find good advise written in simple beautiful ways. Thanks for another treasure.

What a beautiful picture of the Smokies and how fortunate you are to live so near a place where there are no man-made lights at night! I miss that so much.

WHETHER BOY OR GIRL, HOPE FOR CHRISTIAN TEACHERS.
TEACHERS THAT HAVE GOOD TOLERANCE FOR OTHER CHRISTIANS.
TEACHERS THAT ARE NOT IN THE CLASSROOM BECAUSE A LOCAL UNION SAYS THE TEACHER CANNOT BE FIRED.
SO MUCH DIFFERENT NOW THAN THE DAY OF SO MANY RURAL ONE ROOM SCHOOLS. PARENTS WERE FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS TO THE TEACHERS.
AS THE DAYS PASS TO WEEKS AND MONTHS, IS THE CHILD BEING TAUGHT READING, WRITING AND ARITHMETIC SINCE BEGINNING THE FIRST DAYS OF SCHOOL ?
MOM AND DAD, FOLLOW CLOSELY JUST WHAT IS BEING TAUGHT.
WHETHER OR NOT REPORTS ARE TRUE, SOME INNER CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS HAVE WITHDRAWN TEACHERS FROM CLASSROOMS AND CANNOT BE FIRED, JOBS PROTECTED BY POWER OF TEACHER'S UNION. ACCORDING TO THE REPORT THE ONES WITHDRAWN SPEND THE SCHOOLDAY IN A ROOM PROVIDED WHERE VARIOUS THINGS ARE PURSUED UNTIL QUITTING TIME.
