I am sure that you have noticed the improvement in our two outside Cams, 1 & 2. I think that we have solved the problem of them being out of service so often. That is a relief to me. Those two cams are what I am going to show as the tomatoes ripen, and the time is almost here.

There is a way to make these Cam pictures larger. At the bottom of the screen on the right is a spot that says Expansion. click on it and put it in the # 2 position and you will see a much better picture. Be real sure that each function says done before you go on , Dad.

If any of you have not looked at the eagles the last few days you have missed something. It may not be too late yet, but I am afraid that it might be close. Snipping Flowers for More Ripe Tomatoes .

As summer winds down, you are hopefully seeing a lot of green tomatoes on your plants. In order to ripen, they’ll need plenty of warm sun, but depending on where you live, this may be getting harder to come by, especially as days grow shorter into September. So what can you do to ensure the maximum production of your tomato plant at this point? . You need to think quality not quantity, and so we turn to the newest growths on the plant. Your precious plant is likely still producing flowers that, if given the proper time to mature, would eventually turn into wonderful tomatoes too. . Unfortunately, in many climates, these new flowers won’t have enough time to live out the life cycle until they end up red and juicy on your kitchen table. In other words, the first frost will literally nip these flowers in the bud. . And so it is with a heavy, but well-meaning heart, that you should focus your attention beginning in mid-August (again, depending on your climate!) to snipping off the new flowers; this way your plant can use its already strained resources to ripen the existing tomatoes and ensure that you get the most out of your gardening efforts. Until next year, of course.

Here is what the weather report was at 4 a.m. this morning here in the Tennessee Valley, it was 70 degrees and an expected high if 85. And of course a 50% change of thunder storms. The weather has been good for the tomatoes

We are beginning to have hot days, yesterday we had a 85 and the same is expected today. And we always seem to have a thunder storm in the evening. This kind of weather pleases me and the tomatoes seem to be enjoying it.

Kumato - The Tomato That’s Always Ripe

One of the hardest parts of growing tomatoes is waiting for them to ripen.
Of course, you can use green tomatoes in some recipes, a la “Fried Green Tomatoes”, but most recipes call for juicy, ripe tomatoes.
As I was zipping around Google, I came across a tomato variety called the Kumato.
Its claim to fame is that it is able to be picked and used at any stage of development.
As Hellomagazine.com explains, “The Kumato…starts with a dark green skin and a mild flavor. It then turns dark brown with a sweet and spicy aroma, before finally becoming a dark red hue which is sweet and juicy. It is available in two sizes, a Read the rest of this entry »

We had a thunder storm yesterday afternoon that was very strong, and a lot of water fell in a very few minutes about 1/2 of an inch, and a lot of heavy thunder. The temperature is 73 this morning and we expect it to go to 85 again today, And maybe another thunder storm.

.

I am very pleased with our two outside Cams. I think we have them working the way that they should. They were not out of service even one time yesterday or last night, and that is a welcomed improvement. The are important to me right now because those tomatoes are going to soon be turning RED and that is one thing that I promised that you would see.

.

You may see just a little sun glare in the late afternoon but I Think that we will have that fixed very soom.Try them this morning and let me know what you think. And fuss at me if they are not right. ( This time of the year they come on around 6:30 A.M. East Tennessee time.) DAD.

Here I have forgot our Tea and Coffee again. You all know that I have a one track mind, and it is always thinking about tomatoes. If you have the time sit down right here and I will have you a cup in five minuets or less. And it is Starbucks, a gift from a friend. DAD.

This is not so important but it is interesting to me, When you are looking at Cam # 1 you will see on the left side of the screen down near the bottom a bird box. There are three or four baby blue birds in that box. I sit and watch mom & dad carry food to them, it is a pleasure to see all the care and protection that they give their young. I think that they will be leaving the box soon. DAD.

Grow a Tomato Cousin - the Tomatillo

As a Southern California native, I’ve long known about the existence of the tomatillo.
This tomato relative is used in Mexican cooking a lot.
If you’ve ever had Chile Verde or Salsa Verde, you’ve eaten the tomatillo.
Other name for the tomatillo include ground cherries, toma verde, and husk tomato. The last comes because the fruit is covered with a papery husk. The most common color you will see is green (verde in Spanish), but there are also varieties that are yellow and purple.
If you already know how to grow tomatoes, you’re in luck - tomatoes are grown the same way. They’re a warm season vegetable that you should start inside about 6-8 weeks before your average last frost date. If you don’t know your date, you can locate it through the National Climactic Data Center.
About 1-2 weeks before your frost date, start hardening off your seedlings by taking them outside in the shade, starting with 1/2 hour and increasing the time and amount of sun daily until it’s time to plant. Place them in a spot that is tilled with compost added.
Slugs and snails like tomatillos, so staking will help protect the fruits. They are also subject to cutworms, as well as fungi and blights.
In 90-100 days, you can harvest the tomatillos when the husks become brown and they start splitting open.There is evidently an oily substance on the surface, so be sure to wipe that off before cooking.

How are you feeling this morning ? And are you looking for a great day. Well I am. The weather is starting off just a little cooler this thursday morning, the tempeature at 3 a.m. is 67, but we still have a prediction of a high of 85 today. And we are having thunderstorms. Sounds like good growing weather to me.
.
Our tea and coffee is ready, sit right here beside me and we will have a cup and a little visit before you go out into that cold cruel world. I know that will help us both.

We hope that both of our cams 1 and 2 are working this morning. We have spent a lot of time and effort on them. They are important to us, that is where we are going to see those tomatoes turn red. Hollie, Dad and Kelly, June 5, 2009

I am sure that the most of you will know the three pictured above, if not it is old Dad sitting between Hollie on my right and Kelly on my left. They and their families are the ones that we visited last week in Ga. I am not asleep, I was just a little tired after our 3 and 1/2 hour drive. Now you can see that I did really go.

I enjoyed this visit with them very much. I would like to make one more visit some where this year after the tomato season is over. But it all depends on how Mary and I are feeling at that time. At my age it is best not to plan too far ahead. We don't have any idea on which way we should go. But I am sure that we could decide by this fall. Dad.

.

The weather here is staying about the same, at 3 a.m. the tempeature was 73 with a high of 88 expected and a slight chance of showers. It has become just a little dry here not real bad but I did water my tomatoes yesterday. I am watching them very close at this point, because the tomatoes are setting on fast. It won't be long now. Maybe I can wait but it is becoming hard, I want a good home grown tomato sandwuich with lots of mayonaise on it.

.

Now I do have some good news. It is about my two cams 1 & 2. Cam # 2 is in service and was showing some good pictures most of the day yesterday, a few times I saw a little sun glare but not very much. And # 1 is not far behind, we will have it back before the weekend. And not only the sun problem but we will have put a stop to the problem of being out of service so much of the time. We have to thank Michael & Pamala our good friends for this. They are the ones who installed these cams for us in the begining.

Good Morning.

The tea and coffee is ready, I needed it a little early this morning. I am sure that you can use yours early, it will help us settle down and start a new day with hope.

We had a busy but very productive day yesterday. Our dear friends, Michael and Pamela, came to put the housing on Cam #2 and to place the Cam in a different location so that you can see the garden better . We really do appreciate all the hard work they did for us!
.
The only problem that we had was with a glare on Cam #2 . Every thing went fine until we noticed an awful glare from the sun almost blocking out the picture of the tomato garden. The sun is down now and it looks good. We are sure that we will get this fixed soon. I hope that you will bear with me until we do. DAD
.
We are still having real good tomato growing weather. The day is starting off with a temperature of 69 and plenty of bright sun, The high will be in the high 80's. I don't see any sign of rain.
.
