DAD'S FRIDAY ENTRY TWO THOUSAND NINETY

Good Morning,

Things are looking much better this Friday morning, we cleaned up some of the hail storm mess, more Tomato plants will be here soon, and we are going to produce some Tomatoes, Roses and Smiles in spite of the problems that we have had.

Our # 2 Camera is still not in service, there is some trouble in the cable that serves it, the hail storm beat very hard on the side of the bulding where the cable comes in from the street. Verizon the cable company that serves us will be helping to get it going today, I hope.

Someone sent the this story belowI don't know who wrote it but I want whoever did to get credit for it.

"The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder.
I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being..
She said, 'Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?'
I laughed and enthusiastically responded, 'Of course you may!' and she gave me a giant squeeze..
'Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?' I asked.
She jokingly replied, 'I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, and have a couple of kids...'
'No seriously,' I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.
'I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!' she told me.
After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake.
We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this 'time machine' as she shared her wisdom and experience with me..
Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up.
At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium.. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three by five cards on the floor.

Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, 'I'm sorry I'm so jittery. I'll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know.'
As we laughed she cleared her throat and began, ' We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing.
There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die.
We have so many people walking around who are dead and don't even know it!
There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up.
If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight.
Anybody! Can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding opportunity in change. Have no regrets.
The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. She concluded her speech by courageously singing 'The Rose.'
She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives. At the year's end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those months ago.
One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep.
Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be.
These words have been passed along in loving memory of ROSE.
REMEMBER, GROWING OLDER IS MANDATORY. GROWING UP IS OPTIONAL

How are you feeling this new fresh friday morning, I hope that you are rearing to go, I am. But I beleive that sugestion about having a cup of coffee with Dad is a good one, and one that I do always need, of course it is Sumatra x bold and it is steaming hot, Some of you pour for me and let me begin to visit.

The first visit that I am going to make this morning is to Sara's Dog Training blog, I just can't enjoy my coffee untill I find out about Sara and Oreo, I know that Oreo is in safe hands , he is getting the best of care, I Love you Oreo. DAD.

MONDAY'S ENTRY # TWO THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED SEVENTEEN

Good Morning.

I am not going to say a thing to you about this being another monday morning to face you already know how I feel about it. so get your hat and come on with me, we can make it if we will just try.

I would like to say that Mary and I had a very pleasant but busy week. Almost more than Old Dad was able for, but I made it through in one piece. Now I am going to have some of my Rest, Renewing and Relaxing for a few day's and then try to do my part and do my best just be in being good. DAD.
.
I must get busy here and get over to Sara's Dog Training blog and see how Jeff, Sara and Oreo are doing, I am always a little more interested in seeing them on since I was not around yesterday, Sara give me some news and I do hope that it is good. I love that Oreo and I am not forgetting that sweet Misty, her influence is still around. DAD

HARVEST TIPS
.
Tomatoes can be harvested when they begin to show color, as they will continue to ripen. However, the closer you can get to vine-ripened the better the flavor will be. Bird damage usually becomes a concern at this stage. Birds love to peck holes in the fruit. Some gardeners say they're after water, so place some pans of water in the garden. Others claim red Christmas tree ornaments will fake the birds out and they will go away. Putting fake owls in the garden (move them around every few days), covering the plants with bird netting (just before harvest time) and wrapping clusters with fiber row cover are other techniques to try

Winds S at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 70%.
Partly cloudy early then becoming cloudy with periods of light rain later in the day. High 53F. Winds S at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 70%.

I am begining to need some dry weather here in the Tennessee Valley, my garden spot is not yet ready and my plants will be ready before I am able to get them in the ground. DAD.

Maybe it would be a good idea for me to read this link below while I am waiting on dry weather to get here, I might learn something about producing tomatoes their diseases and a lot more. That is what I have been encouraging you to do. Dad.

I started this Journal on August 28, 2003 for the main purpose of helping others produce a good home grown tomato. That is still my desire. And I have added another thing producing Smiles. Smiles are about as important to me as tomatoes I will be glad for any comments or criticism. I appreciate all of my readers who have stayed with me through these years. Dad.

Really 21 degree tempeature is not much of a time to talk about tomato gardening, but we better start now because spring will be here before we are ready for it, one good thing about Smiles you can produce them in zero weather, never gets to cold for them. Dad.

I need to ask how are you this morning ? I know that it is a good morning to stay in that warm bed, 21 degrees here at the tomato garden. We better crawl out and get on the job, we need the money.

I can say that I am glad that this is Friday, because I know that the weekend is near, and I do need it. The help that I get on Sundays are a great help to me. .

We did get a few things done yesterday, the day started out with rain but soon stopped, we were able to get all our birds feeders up and filled with feed, I hope that you will be able to see how the are working today, Cam # 2 may be the best but # 3 is good. Now the lights for night view will soon be ready. I love my Wildlife Habitat. Day.

.In the first paragraph above I promised to give you some thing to smile about when I had a chance. Here it is for this morning, just click on this Sara's Dog Training and you will be at Saras blog. It has never failed for me. Dad.

"Fruiting crops, including tomatoes, need full sun most of the day for good production of quality fruit. Good drainage is also important. In high to medium rainfall areas (more than 30 inches per year) work the soil into ridges and plant on the ridge or build raised beds 12 to 18 inches deep. Plan on setting out at least one cherry tomato and 4 to 6 large-fruited varieties depending on the number of fresh tomato lovers in your family. You'll need stakes or wire tomato cages to support the plants to keep the fruit off the ground where it would rot. To insure even and efficient watering, you will want to put in a drip or soaker hose system for watering. Finally, count on mulch to keep down the weeds."

.We plan to have Cam # 1 out in the garden again today. We had it out 10 hours yesterday, The weather is going to be hot again today a high of 95, We are trying to keep the Camera in the shade as much as possible. We may keep it on the patio looking out over the garden the same as we did yesterday. What you are seeing at the moment on your left is a vine that the humming birds like and then there are 6 of those Brandy Wine tomatoes, and then of course old Dad's resting place. I have spent many hours there watching the birds and listing to the birds sing. And the sound of that bird bath Nothing better than that. Dad.

I am feeling good again this morning and I am waiting on daylight so that I can get outside and get a few things done on my tomato garden. It has rained so much that it has been hard to find the ground dry enough to work in, but we did get a little done yesterday.

Battling Salmonella in Tomatoes

Last summer, headlines everywhere blazed about a salmonella scare that was supposedly connected to tomatoes.
Many stores and restaurants stopped carrying our favorite fruit for a while, severely hurting the tomato industry.

As Michelle Fabio pointed out here last year, ” a report from the University of Georgia estimates that the salmonella scare of this past summer cost Georgia’s economy approximately $25.7 million—and that is just one state.”

Wednesday morning is with us. I did have a restful time on Tuesday. The weather was bad, a lot of snow and cold rain. So I went into our living room and had a good rest lying on our couch where I could see the snow falling, and soon I was asleep I have learned that rest is what I need to keep me going on in the right direction. Keeping in a better mood as I mingle with all of you.

I saw Sara training Misty a few days ago and Oreo was standing on the side looking on and wanting so much to be in action. I hope that Oreo will be back in action soon, DAD.
